6th Edition of The Child Who Stutters:
To the Pediatrician Mailed to Pediatricians Nationwide
Memphis, Tenn. (October 15, 2021)—Oct. 22 marks International Stuttering Awareness Day. For more than seven decades, the Stuttering Foundation has been a trusted source of timely and accurate information on stuttering, helping people who stutter, and their families, find guidance and support.
In October, to raise awareness ahead of the global observance, the Stuttering Foundation mailed more than 46,000 copies of its seminal book on children who stutter to pediatric offices across the country.
“When parents have questions or concerns about the health and development of their children, the first place they look for advice is from their doctor,” said Stuttering Foundation President Jane Fraser. “As a result, pediatricians have become the first source of information on stuttering for many families.
Originally written in 1991 by Barry Guitar, Ph.D., and Edward G. Conture, Ph.D., et al., the new 6th edition of The Child Who Stutters: To the Pediatrician provides updated, practical advice for pediatricians to deliver in the clinical setting, complete with case studies, a risk chart, a checklist for referral to a speech-language pathologist and sample questions to ask parents.
“The idea for a book targeting pediatricians stemmed from our attendance at the American Academy of Pediatrics convention more than 30 years ago,” Fraser said. “Doctors told us quite clearly, ‘We’d like a book written just for us.’ So, Barry, Edward, several well-known pediatricians, along with the Stuttering Foundation’s Vice President of Education, Dr. Dean Williams, set to work creating this lasting guide for the medical community."
Fraser added, "For this year’s International Stuttering Awareness Day, we’re supporting our community by ensuring the latest generation of pediatricians are fully aware of the critical role they play in early intervention and supporting the family of a child who stutters.”
