Building Resiliency with Young Children Who Stutter

Dates Available: 12/28/2020 to 11/30/2025
Registration Deadline: 11/30/2025

Presented by Julia Hollister

The ability to bounce back from challenges is a valuable life skill. Several research studies show that in general, children who stutter tend to be more emotionally reactive, and have lower regulation skills than their peers. This is significant as emotional regulation is a key component to resiliency and can determine how well a child copes with difficulties in life, including stuttering. Regulation, like other skills, can be learned. In this one hour, twenty minute presentation, Julia Hollister, Ph.D., of Loma Linda University discusses the importance of designing holistic stuttering interventions that include resiliency-building practices. Activities that build emotional regulation skills within the framework of stuttering will be discussed.
